The Bates Footwear Story

Andrew Jackson Bates opened a small dress shoe workshop in Massachusetts in 1885, laying the groundwork for what would become a leading uniform footwear maker.

During World War II, the company supplied over a million pairs of boots to American troops, and Bates footwear later found its way onto President Eisenhower’s own feet.

Bates joined Wolverine World Wide in 1969 and now outfits military, police, and public service personnel across more than sixty countries worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Bates boots and sizing.

How should Bates boots fit?

Bates boots should leave about a thumb’s width between the longest toe and the boot’s front. Many wearers find the fit true to size, though some styles run slightly narrow or wide, so checking the width option helps.

Are Bates boots waterproof?

Select styles use waterproof membranes and treated leather to keep feet dry in wet conditions. Not every model is fully waterproof, so it helps to check individual product details before buying.

Do Bates boots meet safety toe standards?

Many Bates work and tactical boots include composite or steel safety toes rated to ASTM F2413 standards, offering protection for demanding job sites and uniform requirements.

How long do Bates boots typically last?

With regular care, many wearers report years of daily use, and Goodyear-welt constructed styles can be resoled to extend their lifespan even further.

How often should leather boots be conditioned?

Conditioning every three to four months suits normal wear, while daily use in harsh conditions may call for monthly conditioning to keep leather supple and crack-free.

Are Bates boots suitable for law enforcement duty?

Yes, Bates supplies footwear used by police departments, security personnel, and military units in more than sixty countries, built specifically for uniformed duty.
